Legal process is an intimidating, complex system that many people find challenging to navigate. We believe that a lack of knowledge and awareness about legal services is one of the major barriers preventing clients from engaging their lawyers. Our goal in this blog post is to present the findings from our study with lawyers and clients in order to better understand how marginal legal knowledge affects the decision making processes when people need assistance with family, employment, or housing issues. No doubt, there is a shortage of legal services available to poor and low-income individuals. We are confronted with the loss of law's effectiveness today, when many of its users do not even comprehend the role law plays each day in their business, in their lives. Our mission is to play a critical role as intermediaries between the law and the people, figures who have the knowledge, skills and trust necessary to resolve disputes, move past deadlocks, dispel tensions, and otherwise bring people and resources together in beneficial ways. Empirical research suggests that more salient problems could be “lack of awareness or understanding that a problem is legal in nature, lack of belief that a lawyer could help, embarrassment, perceived futility, fear, and resignation.” (Dana A. Remus, “Reconstructing Professionalism,” University of North Carolina Legal Studies Research Paper No. 2676094 (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina, 2015), 6.)
